Haahi In Strong Support For New Youth Centre

Friday 27th May saw the blessing of the new Anglican Centre for Youth Ministry Studies at St Johns College in Auckland. The Centre is based in what used to be the recreation room for students at the College.
The Bishop o Te Tai Tokerau, Bishop Te Kitohi Pikaahu led the blessing in karakia, and led waiata in Maori, English and Tongan.
In his role as Chairperson of Te Kotahitanga, the arm of General Synod / Te Hinota Whanui responsible for education across the Church, Bishop Te Kitohi said he commended the young people of the Church for their vision, and said that once again he saw young people leading the way for the rest of the Church.
Bishop Brown Turei, the new Pihopa o Aotearoa, also commended the young people, and saw the new centre as a base from which rangatahi ministry could spread throughout Te Pihopatanga o Aotearoa. Bishop John Gray, Pihopa o Te Wai Pounamu was also present in support.
Also speaking at the event were the heads of the three Tikanga Colleges, Dr Jenny Te Paa, Bishop Winston Halapua and the Reverend John Wright. Dr Te Paa praised those involved in the project as supporting and upholding young women in the Church.
The Chair of Te Kakano Puāwaitanga, the governing board for the Anglican Centre for Youth Ministry Studies and Te Māra Rangatahi Ministry School, the Ven. Joe Huta also spoke, congratulating the Church for their support for the venture.

Rangatahi Are Doing It For Themselves

Representatives for the new Rangatahi Council of Te Manawa o te Wheke, met for the second time this
year in Rotorua on Saturday 28th May.
The council continued discussions from the first hui regarding the council’s role and rangatahi development within the Amorangi. The council suggested long and short term plans which shall see them take on responsibility for almost all youth matters including; finance, hui organization & facilitation and youth ministry development. Amorangi Kaihautu Arthur Hokianga, who is responsible for this establishment made it known to those present, that he would only act as an overseer for the council and everything will be facilitated by the rangatahi themselves.
Already some council members represent rangatahi on other Hui Amorangi committees. Koriniti Hokianga (Tamaki) is the youth rep on the Hui Amorangi Whaiti. Koroniti was able to report back to the council on matters concerning youth. Kahu Miller (Ngaruawahia) will look forward to General Synod in Christchurch where she will travel as the rangatahi delegate. And 5 of the council members will represent the Amorangi rangatahi at the Runanganui held later in the year. Nikii O'Callaghan of St Faiths says, “Its awesome to see each other on these committees…it shows the active role rangatahi have in our haahi”.
Before the hui came to a close, the council put forward nominations to elect a managing committee: Derek Wall (Murupara) – Chairman, Moana Mc Neil (Tauranga) – Secretary and Koroniti Hokianga (Tamaki) & Nikii O’Callaghan (St Faiths) –Treasurers.
The next meeting is scheduled for the 30th of July at Te Ao Marama Hall, St Faiths, Rotorua.
